Uganda - Eleventh week

Cutting onions

On our eleventh week, we we had a practical training to pineapple farmers in Buwunga. We talked about the importance of organic agriculture and organic pesticides. We applied together with farmers organic manure to the pineapple field. This field is a test organic pineapple field.

Few weeks before we applied chicken manure to the same field and planted papaya trees around the field. This time we planted onions around the field to keep pests away from the field. For this, we had to cut a half of the onion and place the other part of the onion to the soil. It will grow and protect pineapples from pests.

The reason of creating this test field was that farmers wish to switch from conventional farming to organic farming. For that, they need support with knowledge and finance.

We supported them with our knowledge - we trained them about organic agriculture/pesticides and we donated papaya plants, onions, chicken manure and organic manure.

Construction

Few weeks ago, we saw a construction and many builders there. This time the house was almost finished. This house was built directly next to our test pineapple field.

So, we were lucky to get some knowledge about how builders in Uganda are building a house - which material they are using for building, how much time takes to build one building, how many workers are needed, what kind of work safety methods they are using.

Agricultural machinery is rare in Uganda. So, we were applying this manure to the field manually.  Obviously manually it takes longer time than with machines, but for us it was useful lesson to gain knowledge about this subject.

We learnt quite good methods about applying manure and we paid a lot of attention to every step we made. I personally enjoyed this activity very much, because it was a combination of theory and practise.

Only challenge which occurred with applying organic manure to the pineapple field was that the pineapple plant is quite sharp and it scratched our legs much. It was quite hurting, but again - no complains, just challenges.

Organic manure

We introduced to the farmers how to use the fertilization method. They agreed to try to use this method also on their own fields and work hard for excellent results.

Our project about organic pineapple field was successful. Farmers were satisfied and they got motivation to keep working towards their dreams/wishes.

In addition, we helped them with market/export research. It won´t be too difficult to sell organic pineapples inside Uganda, but for export there may occur some challenges, because of high standards and finance. For this issue, we were thinking that the best decision for them is to collaborate with already existing international export companies not to try to create new one.
