Uganda - Seventh week

Million dollar view

I have been in Uganda already seven weeks and I have experienced here a lot of amazing things. I have met with so amazing and unique people.

Our seventh week as interns was really productive. We explored the city, where we are living in - Masaka. We found so many amazing places and of course we enjoyed the million dollar view.

Masaka is a large town in the Central Region of Uganda. Most of the people in the Masaka region are farmers. They are also processing meat and fish.

They have a large manufacture of footwear. In addition, they are manufacturing furniture and of course food products, such as baked products.

We had a great opportunity to see, how a real professional is making his work. We visited one community based organisation in Rakai district - Kamuli Child Care Association (KACHICA). The place was really close to Tanzania.

This organisation had many purposes, but the most important of them are following:
  • Clean toilets for girls and for boys
  • School fence
  • Water trench

We observed, how the civil engineer from Netherlands was measuring the land and was calculating endless amount of numbers. This talented man had been already 15 years in Uganda and knows a lot about this country and about community work. We learnt a lot of technical skills from him and also got knowledge about fundraising and donations.

We participated a meeting about funding the school, which were organised by local community and project team from Kampala, who helped them already with building 2 clean toilets and building a water tank.

We got information about the strategy of the community and the strategy of the project organisation. We also got a detailed overview about financial plans and methods.

We also made a follow-up visit to Kyanamukaka St.Mugagga school. We checked the school garden, which we made with students a month ago.

Result was quite surprising. Most of the plants had started to grow. Since now, the project in this school have been successful.

We used seeds from Germany, for example pumpkin, cucumber, carrot and parsley.

Our idea was to create an organic school garden without using any chemicals. This garden still needs some organic pesticides to protect plants against pests.
